There was a lot to like about this book - mainly, I loved Nix and Scotlyn. (Side note, I hated her name at first, the explanation of why she was named that though was pretty adorable.) They were great main characters for sure. Scotlyn stole the show for me, a perfect mix of assertive and vulnerable, especially since she was mute.

For the main characters, general premise, I gave this book three stars. Here is what I didn't care for:

I had a really tough time getting into the side characters and people they surrounded themselves with. I felt like we were supposed to get really invested in Nix's friends and I just... didn't care. They took up quite a bit of the bulk of this story and it felt like filler.

I wish they had gotten together sooner and hadn't been brought together in the last 20% of the book. The situation with Lincoln that was keeping them apart was... weird. The entire collateral situation just didn't grab me. The big confrontation the book was over in a flash - no suspense at all.

I did appreciate that Scotlyn was never miraculously healed by the end of the book and still had trouble speaking.

Overall, a nice easy read but not a ton of depth to it.

I would give Freefall by Tess Oliver 3 out of 5 stars. The plot and conflicts were good however, I just didn’t love the romance between Nix and Scotlyn. While their story is a good concept I believe it could have been executed better. The connection these two shared lacked the genuine love two people should have in a romance.

Nix isn’t your stereotypical badass tattoo artist. I did enjoy this different take on his character. You have a caring guy who’s doing whatever he can to take care of his family and friends. That being said, this kind and caring guy does show that he can handle his own when the occasion calls for it.
As for Scotlyn (I really LOVED this name) she is one tough girl. Not only does she survive a traumatic accident that killed her entire family she proves she is a survivor in more ways than one throughout the story. Even the bad guy of the story, Lincoln, was a well thought out character. I could see a softer side Lincoln had towards Scotlyn but the controlling evil side was more dominant.

Throughout the book we are shown glimpses of the secondary characters getting their own romance stories. I loved all the secondary characters and thought they were well written into this story. Unfortunately I did not enjoy how rushed their romance became towards the end of this book. Dray and Cassie could have spent their tiny scenes in this story building the tension and suspense leading up to a separate book to tell their story and showing them finally giving into their feelings. By pushing Dray and Cassie together in this book it felt too rushed and left me confused on how to feel the connection these two shared. Overall I liked the book but I just didn’t love it.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I follow a few bloggers and they posted this book as a freebie. Synopsis intrigued me and the superficial part of me was pulled in by the cover lol!! My 3 star review really is leaning heavily towards a 4 star.

A few things that threw me off and knocked down a star

1) The Nana age conflict. I couldn't wrap my head around the various timelines of her life that conflicted with the given age and health issues.

2) No ages truly given of any character besides the slightly annoying jailbait Taylor. She's 17 and we know this repetitively since Clutch is counting down until she's legal hahaha.

3) and, this is really light of a reason and not weighing too heavily in my reviewing. The cover model doesn't match Nix's physical description in the book. Which the description of Nix is all kinds of sexxxxay. The rest of the characters were vaguely described, but not in a way I could truly picture them.

4) Scotlyn (sp?) had use of computer and had cell phone w/texting ability. Her possessive boyfriend didn't monitor those daily? It just didn't make sense.

5) a few minor grammar and/or typo errors. Nothing too much to distract from the really great flow of the book though.

Now for the good stuff that I liked or really really loved

1) The flow was really fluid through out the book from beginning to end. I never felt like putting the book down because as scenes and chapters changed I just kept wanting to read more.

2) Main to side characters complimented each other. I felt like I could like the like able pain in the ass guys and their hearts' desires in girls. Ok, maybe not Taylor lol! She's 17 after all. I could even gasp feel for the main villain at times, but not too much because he's a villain after all.

3) let's all be real here when get these romance books of any genre we kinda stereo type and dumb down our expectations. That way we aren't too disappointed if it turns out uber cheesy or we are easily satisfied because our expectations are lowered. Well this book really pleasantly surprised me. It explored a few more avenues than I expected and included some subjects I rarely see covered let alone honestly in any book genre.

I will pay for the box set of 4 books which includes this book. I want to see if maybe the few things that knocked down my rating this book a strong 4 star get addressed as this author writes more. Plus the box set is $6.99 so the cheap bastard in me saves $2 hahaha
