Quick & Dirty: Russian fiction based on real history.

Opening Sentence: Beyond the sunrise, halfway to the moon, and so very far away it would make your feet weep to think about it, lies a land vast in size and deep in sadness.

The Review:

Blood Red, Snow White started off great. It began like a fairytale told by a loving, wise grandfather. The writing in this part was captivating, pulling me into the story, imagining the ‘young man’ and his leather suitcase. I loved it. And then it’s handed over to the young boy and told from Arthur’s perspective. Worst mistake ever.

Even in a tale with a happy ending, there may be sadness on the way.

The Russian history is interesting enough but unfortunately not my kind of read. I kept wondering whether it was the same author who began this story or not! How can a book do a 180 from such enchantment? We learn about Arthur’s travels, how he’s engrossed in the war without meaning to. However, it was a very slow, draining read.

I was surprised to learn it is based on a true story and I used that as an excuse to explain away much of the bleakness.

The only part of this novel I enjoyed was learning about Russia. There was a lot of narration and Arthur’s love for it had me wondering what such a country is like.

If, like me, you are drawn in by the title then I apologise in advance as you will be sorely disappointed. There is nothing remotely similar to the dreamy fairytale I imagined.

Notable Scene:

Arthur came to the story and found himself a job and somewhere to live.
He also found himself in the middle of a story beyond anyone’s imagination.

Blood Red Snow White Marcus Sedgwick 9781842551844 Books Reviews

'Blood Red Snow White' is a fantastically detailed account of one of Russia's most important times in history - the Russian Revolution. The author uses a unique writing style to tell the story - the novel is divided into three sections, each with their own story and part of history. The way each part is written was intriguing and very different from anything I've read before - especially when it comes to historical fiction. It almost seemed like the story is written as a fairy tale or folk tale and is being told to the reader by a storyteller. This gives the book a completely different feel than any other writing style I've come across. I'm not even exactly sure how to describe it. It's one of those things that you just have to experience for yourself in order to understand. It took me awhile to get used to the narrative style - and I have to admit that part of my reading experience was marred by this issue. I couldn't really get into the story as I would've liked - it felt like I was being read a story instead of being able to put myself inside the character's world. It's not a bad thing at all - just not something that I prefer in my reading. Aside from this, every other aspect of the book was wonderful. The incredible attention to detail and the descriptive accounts of these major historical times really brought it all to life for me - even if I couldn't insert myself into the story. I could practically close my eyes and see each of the scenarios playing out before me. I'm not a huge history buff, but I enjoy the occasional historical fiction - and this one was perfect. Definitely recommended for fans of historical literature - especially dealing with Russia.
This is a wonderful book ....fascinating on two levels. The mixing of the fairy tale and the historical events works extremely well. I won't give away the ending ...but it ties everything together beautifully with not a single speck of disappointment. A must read!
This book is faction, set in a turbulent time in Russian history. I'd have liked it better if I'd felt more liking for Arthur Ransome, the main character. The main interest for me was how,he, a journalist got caught up in world affairs and ended up as a spy.
will definitely reorder
This book fills the reader with a sense of urgency, and espionage, and the reader never really knows the truth which makes the book more like reality than ever. I would highly recommend this book which draws you into a fairy tale, and makes you question if you ever really left it.
I have only recently stumbled upon Marcus Sedgwick's books. And this is only the second one I've read(the first being the Swordhand Omnibus, also a great read). He has a very interesting writing style that keeps you turning the pages. Based on the activities of writer and journalist Arthur Ransome, caught-up in the whirlwind of the Bolshevik revolution in the early twentieth century, we are taken on a journey that involves both love and espionage. Not exactly being a student of Russian history, this book really awakened me to those times, a century ago, when the russian people rose-up against the tyranny of the Czar. This is a great read, and I will be buying more of Mr. Sedgwick's books.
