Meh... not terrible but not excellent. I found Massie the heroine, and the whole story, pretty bland and forgettable. The Hero, Captain Oliver Worthy was a sweetheart, but I felt the plot did not do him justice in this slow-as-molasses story. He is a sea captain who is sick and convalescing at Massie's inn while his ship is being worked on and supplied before sailing on another mission during the Napoleonic Wars. Both characters are sweet and likable but their romance is very bland and kinda boring -- no sexual tension, nor engaging repartee, nor humor here. I always enjoy reading all that leads up to characters falling in love, but in this case the H and h suddenly find themselves in love (?!), but even this climatic realization here was antiseptic and underwhelming. Then the reader is further dragged along into a war spy development thrown in I suspect to keep the reader awake. I think this was contrived to show Massie was capable of some gumption. Pity, expected better from a good author.Tags : Marrying The Captain [Carla Kelly] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Marrying The Captain Carla Kelly 9780373295289 Books Reviews
I have cherished this Carla Kelly series, but have never managed to get over the name of this heroine. I just cannot imagine the beautiful woman who can be called Nana. Someone else wrote about this, and I thought this reviewer was so narrowminded. but a bunch of Carla Kelly's stories after, read and reread, I still cannot get over it. She was righ!!t. Nana is Wendy's nanny and Disney is way too deeply ingrained in my chidhood memories to give room to someone else. Otherwise it is a good story. I fervently recommend the other two, The Surgeon's Lady, and, marrying the Royal Marine, which is unforgettable, and where the heroine's name is so wonderfully used.
I have read several books by Carla Kelly and I am amazed by the richness of the characters and the stories. None of the books are like any story line I have read before, and believe me, I have read a lot of books! I intend to read all of her historical romances and learn a lot history along the way. Marrying the Captain is the first book in a awesome trilogy about three sisters and the love they find during the Napoleonic War. The second book is The Surgeon's Lady and third, and my personal favorite, is Marrying the Royal Marine. I will be reading these again and again. What a wonderful movie trilogy this would make! Listen up Hollywood!
I was just plugging names into 's search to check out if favorite authors had written anything new and was delighted to find Carla Kelly's latest. It's always a special emotional and mental treat to read one of her books. Her books are sane and realistic - as opposed to flighty/silly/fluff. They are also usually emotionally wrenching but at the same time written with humor. The characters here reminded me a bit of Mrs Drew Plays Her Hand, which book I think I will now pull out and reread! They are regencies that don't have balls, routs, picnics, and a large social whirl in them but rather usually concern personal lives of the military or naval men of the time rescuing a distraught but strong heroine who has also much to offer the lonely hero. Unlike many other romances Kelly does not rely on sex to sell her books, just real feeling. (not that I mind sex in my reads! but sometimes that's all some books feature) Thank you Harlequin for publishing her work! And thank you, Carla Kelly, for writing them.
Carla Kelly has set up a rather contrived way to connect the lives of 3 sisters -- they are all illegitimate daughters of a dissolute nobleman. The first of these daughters to find a husband is working at a failing inn with her grandmother at one of Britain's seaports. Nevertheless, one of the captains of a ship that needs a major rehauling before it is seaworthy again decides to stay at this inn, gets sick, and finds himself falling for this daughter.
The picture of life at this time is just charming and realistic. Each character comes to life and you really care about what happens to them. Kelly has the magic touch with combining history with people living relatively ordinary times in Regency England. I like that Kelly primarily sticks with non-noble people in her books. She shows how tough life can be, and how women especially had to struggle to make a life for themselves within great social constraints. That said, she writes with both great humanity and humor.
I never knew about Kelly and surprisingly my friend told me about her books and told me we're kinda of neighbors in a way, I even told a friend about her and she even flipped out that I 'knew' Kelly (not personally lol), and to tell her what a get author she is and has her books... So I finally decided after looking at all of Kelly's books (not realising there is A LOT lol) I decided to read this one first... and of course I couldn't stop reading it that I read it all in a day... then I see that it's has two books in the trilogy I have to go read the others too... She's a really great author and know that she loves writing and she does her research taking me back to the history. I know I'll have to go get more books to read, and she's now added to my favorite authors list.
